Words Geoff Baldwin Photography Luke Ray.
My buddy Kev has a knack for importing vehicles. Over the years he’s accumulated a killer collection of custom bikes and cars that are enough to turn any moto enthusiast green. But of all his trick rides it’s his 1951 Harley Davidson Panhead that really takes my fancy. I’ll be honest here and say that Harleys have never really been my thing, but the first time I saw Kev’s Pan all that changed. There’s no denying that the era this bike’s from was one of the most visually spectacular automotive design periods in history, but Kev’s Pan is the perfect balance of classic '50s cool and tidy custom work. Everything from the chunky tyres to the wheel covers and cocktail shaker mufflers balances perfectly with its fifties styling. Like all of Kev’s bikes there’s a cool story behind how it ended up in his hands, but this one brings a whole new meaning to “sight unseen”.

“In Australia, you’ve got several options; cricket, you have football, you have cars, and my dad was a car racer back in the day,” says Jason Humble. “So I was fairly blessed as a kid—I got to spend a lot of time at the race track.”
When it finally came to owning and running his own race car, Humble had fallen in love with small, revvy, mighty, rotary-powered Mazdas"

Read MoreIgnition Special: Terry Davis’ 1932 Roadster
It all began with a magazine. The glossy pages full of American hot rods entranced the 14 year old Terry Davis and it was the start of something beautiful. Growing up around speedways like Rowley Park, Mount Gambier, Portland and the Sydney showground, it didn’t take long for Terry to choose his career and at 15 he started work as an apprentice motor mechanic. Every apprentice needs a project car and Terry was no different. By 18 he had completed a ground up rebuild of an FX Holden and had well and truly caught the bug. Joining the Ramrodders Hot Rod Club in the 70’s with the FX earned him his fair share of ribbing. Something had to be done. The rod of choice was a 1934 Plymouth Sedan.

When did you start drawing and how did your life as an artist begin?
I started drawing at a very young age, as was common I think for most people growing up. I liked taking things from my favourite shows at the time and recreating them or adding things to them to make them a little different. I remember a couple friends and I had this whole thing where we would take characters like Spongebob and make them wear mech battle suits or add ridiculous guns on them. That's the fun thing about drawing.. you can make something that you're sure no one (or at least no one in your group of friends) has seen before.

Kit Racer: 1973 Dodge Challenger Race Car
In the early-1970s, Chrysler came up with a unique program to help promote its vehicles in sportsman-level circle-track racing. These were racecars in kit form, released through their then-distributor Petty Enterprises and developed by the legendary Larry Rathgeb, who was also part of the streamlined Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird programs.

By the time I arrived to shoot, he’d already silver flaked the whole front clip and the dash. On the morning of my visit, Karl was just doing the past preparations for painting the right side of the van that day.

How would you describe your art?
I suppose the easiest way to describe my art is that it's kind of illustrative in a cartoony way. I like to tell a story with my paintings, like an old three panel comic strip only the first and third panel are missing and it's up to the viewer to make up their own beginning and end. My style fits nicely into the low brow, kustom kulture, tiki, surf & punk genres.. Go figure.
